Technique Friday Tip - Twilight Inspired Birthday Card

Happy Friday!

I finally had the time to make my sister, Lillie's, birthday card. We are both Twilight fans so I thought I would make her birthday card around that theme. She always blows me away with her creativity, so this time I hope I can surprise her.

I learned this very cool technique at the San Antonio regionals last month as part of one of the Workshop Wows. There really isn't a name, so I will call it "Painting Effects"!

This technique turns crystal effects and reinker into paint. In this project we are going to paint a flower from the pretties kit. Take a look...

 

Cool right?

Supplies Used:

• Crystal Effect
• Red Riding Hood Cardstock, Reinker and Stamp Pad
• Watercolor brush and Sponge
• Pretties Kit and Riding Hood Red Taffeta Ribbon
• Rhinestone Brad and Dazzling Diamonds Glitter
• Heard From the Heart Stamp Set
• Black Cardstock and Stamp Pad
• White Cardstock
• Glue Dots

Instructions:

Use a plastic plate to mix your paint. Ingredients for paint include crystal effects and reinker.

 

Pour crystal effect on our place and squeeze 4 to 5 drops of reinker into the crystal effects. Use a toothpick to blend together. Use more or less reinker depending on the color you are trying to achieve.

   

Use a watercolor brush to pick up your paint and generously start to color your flower.

 

Once you have completely colored your flower, sprinkle it with dazzling diamonds glitter while it's still wet from the paint.

   

Cover it was as little or as much glitter as you desire and shake off excess onto plate. You can dab the flower with the glitter on the plate if you missed any spots. Leave the flower on the plate to dry completely while you complete the rest of the project. Finished flower should look like this...

 

You ready to see the final card? Here it is...

 

I think it turned out pretty good. I hope Lillie likes it! I sponged around the white cardstock with Red Riding Hood ink and I used glue dots to attach the flower and hold down the pin from the Pretties Kit.

Technique Friday - Twilight Bookmark!

Happy Halloween!

I totally forgot that Friday was Halloween when I posted on Wednesday. Instead of showcasing the regional technique I planned, I am going to go with the Halloween spirit and post something more appropriate for the occasion.

In the past several weeks I have been engrossed in the Twilight saga. I have become very fond of this story despite all my resistance to obsess! I think Edward and Bella are an awesome couple and Stephenie Meyer has captured a very romantic and passionate, yet exciting, love story. I can't wait for the movie to open on November 21st. With that said, not only is today Halloween, which is very appropriate for vampires, but it's also opening ticket day for the movie release.

You will notice on the right side of my blog I have posted a Twilight movie count down and you can click on the picture and see the movie trailer and pictures from the movie, very cool, and you will want to check that out.

So for my technique, I thought I would pay tribute to Twilight with a hand stamped book mark with a Twilight theme....

 

If you have read the book, you will understand the significance of "sparkle" and I thought the "always" definition captured the book theme well.

Supplies used:

• White cardstock cut 6" x 2"
• Doodle This, Embrace Life, Warm Words, and Define Your Life Stamp Sets
• Riding Hood Red Taffeta, Black Gingham, and White Organdy Ribbons
• Slot Punch and Ticket Corner Punch
• Heat and Stick Powder
• Dazzling Diamonds and Romantic Red Glitter
• Versamark, Black, and Riding Hood Red Ink Pads
• Sponge Dauber and heat gun

Instructions:

• Punch corners with ticket corner punch
• Punch top of bookmark with slot punch
• Ink up sponge dauber with black ink and color edges of bookmark
• Using versamark stamp swirls from Doodle This stamp set on top and bottom of bookmark
• Add heat and stick powder and heat with heat gun
• Add Dazzling Diamonds glitter and then heat again to set the glitter
• Stamp rose from Embrace life with versamark
• Add head and stick powder and heat with heat gun
• Add Romantic red glitter and heat again to set
• Stamp Always definition in black
• Stamp Sparkle in Riding Hood Red
• Add ribbon

The technique with the heat and stick powder and glitter is a great way to make sure your glitter stays on your project. There are several steps but very easy...

It's Friday's Technique Tip Time!

Happy Friday!!

I am about to leave for San Antonio Texas where I will be attending the Stampin' Up Regional Event tomorrow. I am very excited to be going with my best friend and first downline member, Amy Luna. Don't worry, you will be the first to know all the fabulous things we did. So be sure to check back early next week when I plan to share my experience with you!

Today's tip will be quick but very cool...it's call the Dryer Sheet Technique, take a look...

 

How pretty is that and doesn't it look like snow? The Lovely as a Tree stamp set makes the perfect winder wonderland. I received this technique 6x6 page at the Stampin' Up! convention this past year from Liz Miller of California and I just had to share it.

Supplies used:

• Used dryer sheet
• Anywhere glue stick
• Dazzling Diamonds Glitter
• Lovely as a Tree Stamp Set
• Night of Navy stamp pad
• Ticket corner punch
• Brocade Blue, Confetti White, and Night of Navy cardstock

Instructions:

• Stamp image on neutral cardstock, color if desired
• Cover entire piece of stamped cardstock with the anywhere glue stick
• Place a used dryer sheet over the glue and smooth out
• Trim edges or fold dryer sheet around to the back of cardstock
• Pour dazzling diamonds glitter over the top of image and rub into dryer sheet
• Tap off excess glitter
• Adhere dryer sheet image to your project

Another busy week has come and gone and I'm still not caught up on my posts. Friday's post was missed due to my daughter's, girlfriend's baby arrival. I thought it ironic that my last post was for her baby cards and prayers for her birth and then the little bundle of job arrived Friday afternoon just a couple of days later. She is gorgeous and she has soooooo much hair, you could probably put it in ponytails. Her name is Malia just like my girlfriend, whom I have been friends with since 4th grade. I am always so thankful for her friendship, especially that we have made an effort to keep close and in touch for all these many years. Love you Malia....

So now on to our technique and Halloween treat idea! The technique we will be focusing on embossing. It was a surprise to me at the crop I attend this past Saturday, that many people have never tried this technique. It's a great technique to add dimension and texture to your crafting projects.

 

Supplies used:

• Batty for You stamp set
• Batty Jumbo wheel
• Ghostly Greetings designer paper cut 4 x 1 inch
• Black cardstock cut 6 x 4 inches
• White and tangerine tango cardstock
• Black and Versamark stamp pads
• Pumpkin Pie ribbon about 7 inches long
• Black embossing powder and stamping dimensionals
• Slot, scallop circle, and 1 3/8 inch circle punches
• Medium cello bags and your favorite candy

Instructions:

Fold the black cardstock in half using the longest side. Ink up the jumbo wheel with the versamark pad by rolling the wheel on the pad several times.

Roll the wheel along the bottom part of the open side of the black cardstock.

Cover the stamped image with black embossing powder.

 

Use a heat gun to heat up your powder. The heat gun will melt the powder and you will see it change into liquid. As it starts to change, slowly move the gun over the the cardstock until all the powder is melted. Be sure not to leave the heat gun in the same place for very long or you might burn your cardstock.

 

Hold your designer paper to the top of the crease fold, just above your embossed image. Be sure the cardstock is open. Use the slot punch,or other hole punch that is large enough for ribbon to fit through the hole.  Punch a hole on each side of the cardstock and paper. Be sure to punch through both pieces of paper.

 

Thread your ribbon through both sides of the cardstock from the back and tie a knot in the front.

 

Stamp your batty for you image on white cardstock and punch out using the 1 3/8 in circle punch. Punch out a scallop circle and glue the two pieces together as shown. Use a couple of dimensionals to adhere the piece to your black cardstock.

 

Using a snail adhesive ensure there is adhesive along both bottom sides of the black cardstock. Add you candy to the cello bag and sandwich the cello between the top and bottom of the folded piece of black cardstock. Snail works best as it will be easy to detach the cello from the cardstock when you are ready to eat the candy.

Give this to your favorite trick or treater or enjoy it for yourself!

Technique Tip It's Friday - Split Negative

It's Friday, yeah! And I actually have one day this weekend that I can catch up on stamping and house work. I am excited! I might even get a Big Shot Saturday out on Saturday, won't that be something?

Tonight, we have stamp camp. This will be our last one of the year and everyone's favorite as we focus on Christmas. All the project will be christmas projects and only one is a card.We will have several big shot projects so this should be new and exciting for everyone! Of course I will be sharing them with you so be checking back next week for stamp camp posts.

Today I am going to show you an awesome technique, the split negative. It's got a great effect but does require a little bit of effort. I made 60 of these for the Stampin Up Convention swaps this past summer. Took me forever!!! But they were a hit.

This was my technique page...

 

Supplies include:

• Bronc Buster Stamp Set
• White and Black craft pads
• White and Black embossing powder
• White and Black cardstock
• Silver Brushed cardstock

Instructions for the Split Negative Technique:

• Choose a large stamp set, either detailed or a solid type image
• Stamp onto black cardstock with white craft ink and emboss with white embossing powder
• Stamp onto white cardstock with black craft ink and emboss with black embossing powder, or you can use set of contrasting color combinations
• Cut both images in half at the same place
• Layer onto another piece of cardstock using one black and one white piece, you will have enough for two separate projects

A little bit of work as you will probably have to adjust your cardstock based on where you stamped your image, but it's well worth it. Check out my finished card...

 

I love this card and I love the black and white effect. I think brown would look nice as well.

Technique Tip It's Friday...Scrapbooking Spotlight!

Welcome to Friday!

I don't know about you, but it's been one heck of a week for me and I won't get a break over the weekend either. I will be working in Scrapbook University all day tomorrow and I have my stamp club and World Card Making Day event on Sunday. Plus, my brother-in-law and his new wife will be visiting...I said all of this to hopefully get some sympathy! Because I will need it!!!!

OK, on with the show....

Today's Tip will be from my 2 page spread that I will be teaching at Scrapbook University tomorrow. My theme is "From Flowers to Manhood" I was introduced to this technique during our annual Stampin Up convention this past summer. I don't know about you, but I LOVE working with the Stampin Up Simply Scrappin Kits. As you can tell I have a pretty busy life, so anything that can help me get stamping into my schedule is a winner! The Scrappin Kits help me do just that...I don't have to spend a lot of time working on layouts, finding matching papers, or digging through my stash for embellishments. It's all in the kits! The problem is I have boys. And the kits do limit me on themes, especially on those that I can use with my boy pictures. Most kits have flowers, and a lot of them! So what can you do????

You can turn those flowers into much more by using your punches! Let's take a look at a 2 page spread I designed that uses the kit as is, with all it's flowers. I am using Winter Retreat, lots of good masculine colors, but way too many flowers...

All the supplies are from the kit, except for the white paper that I cut using my Stampin Up Big Shot, my new favorite tool, and my Top Note Die. Another great thing about these kits are the self adhesive dies. You just peel and stick, so easy! As you can see, I used a lot of flowers. Flowers are great for my daughter, pictured here, but not so great for my son. We have all those great cake pictures we have to scrapbook.

I wanted to use the same layout, so I got all my punches out and went to work...

 

On the right page, I used about 5 different circle punches to make all different sized circles, as the die flowers are different sizes. I punched them out right from the adhesive sheet of flower dies so that I could still take advantage of the self stick feature.

   

Here I used the 1 3/8 in circle punch to punch out a circle from one of the flowers.

 

We now have "Flowers to Manhood"! How cool is that? Let's take a closer look at the pages...

   

You can't even tell it's a flower, yet it still makes a perfect accent to your page either way!

Another tip from these pages comes from using my square scallop punch. I punched out a piece using the designer paper from the kit. Again the page is full of flowers, but I needed something more manly to accent my photo mats.

   

Last, but not least I wanted to show you how I used my Top Not die on this page.

   

The accent was kinda plain with just the words and the die adhesives, so I used my slot punch to make holes to insert my ribbon. I used my double rectangle punch to punch holes in my olive circle so that I could thread the circle through the ribbon. Then I just tied knots on both ends after threading the ribbon through the top note. It's movable too, just pull the ribbon from either side. LOVE IT! I thought that was pretty cool...

Technique Tip It's Friday!!! World Card Making Day Spotlight

Happy Friday!

Today I am going to focus on the Stampin Up "Simply Sent Card Element". You are going to love how easy the kits make card making and I have found a way to stretch the kit so that you can make 3 extra cards, all from the materials included in the kits.

2 of the kits advertise that you can make 9 cards and come with the following:

• 6 sheets of 8.5 x 11 textured card stock
• 2 sheets of 8.5 x 11 double sided designer paper exclusive to only these kits
• 1 sheet of self adhesive die cuts
• Various assortment of ribbons
• Other embellishments like buttons or brads

The Christmas Kit is the exception as you can make 18 cards from this kit.There are only a fews things you need to add to this list to complete your cards. You will need some adhesive and of course stamps to add your greetings and you can use either stamp pads or markers to ink your stamps.

TIP:When using markers to ink your stamps, you would just color the image with the bold tip side of the marker and then breathe on the stamp to re-moisten it before stamping. Markers are great to use if you would like multiple colors on one stamp or if you just want to ink only a portion of the image on the stamp.

   

These are cards from Flower Power. The designer paper and die cuts are awesome in this kit! In the Stampin Up catalog the kit says you can make 9 cards with 3 each of 3 different designs. There are enough supplies to make 12 cards with 4 different designs and you have extra designer paper left over. I altered one of the Stampin Up designs to allow for the cardstock to make the 3 extra cards. 

The Rose Red card above is the Stampin Up design, however the instructions suggest you use plum cardstock form the kit, instead of the card stock, I used the plum designer paper. The Perfect Plum card design above was cased from Splitcoast and is the additional card that I was able to make from the kit. These cards are very girlie and are great for any occasion. The wow flowers stamp set coordinates with this kit but you could use a set you already have on hand.

     

These cards are from Rock Star. You don't have to alter the Stampin Up designs from this kit to allow for enough material to make 12 cards. The Starring You stamp set coordinates with this kit.

The Old Olive card above is my own design. I used the scraps I had left over from making the Stampin Up designs, I hate to waste any of this great paper. I stamped the "way to go" on a piece of the textured card stock. It's hard to see in the picture but the texture of the cardstock gives the image the same texture like you would get with the kissing technique and it coordinates nicely with the patterned paper design.

This kit is great for the men in your life. If you are like me, I don't have a lot of manly stamps to make boy cards, but this kit helps solve that problem. My nephew, Ty, has a birthday coming up soon. Guess what card he will be getting?

Technique Tip It's Friday - TTIF

It's Friday again already! I can't believe this will be my 3rd Friday Technique post ...where has the time gone?

Today's technique will be reflection stamping. You can't do this technique with every stamp and it really does require a special scene to achieve the reflection look. Some examples include water or glass reflections using animal or tree stamps or those with people work best. One of my favorite stamp sets to do this technique with is Wanted. The horse works perfectly for this technique. Let's take a look...

 

Doesn't this look like the the horse is running in the grass along a pond or river?

Here are the steps for creating the reflection:

• Ink your image and stamp it on cardstock
• Ink your image with the same ink and stamp it on your piece of acetate
• Flip your piece of acetate over so your stamped image is facing down
• Line it up with your first image stamped on the cardstock to create the reflection
• Press firmly and rub over the acetate to transfer the stamped image from the acetate to the cardstock
• Doodle or paint background with watercolor crayons and use the aqua painter to lightly blend in the colors

Technique Tip It's Friday!

It's been a busy week and I am soooo glad it's Friday. We are having a birthday party for my son tonight and I still have a lot to do, but I want to take care of all my wonderful readers first.

You are going to love the technique and examples I have for you today! We will be spotlighting the "Wax Paper Resist" technique. Check out this example...

 

I receive this swap from Joyce K. at the Stampin Up Convention this year...very cute! 

Supplies she used includes:

• Wild About You stamp set
• Basic Gray, Whisper White, Black, and Glossy White cardstock
• Going Gray, and Black Stazon stamp pads
• Accessories include: Rubber Brayer, Wax Paper, Crimping Tool, Black Eyelet, and Black Grosgrain Ribbon, Iron

Instructions for the Wax Paper Resist Technique:

• Wad up your wax paper in a tight ball
• Unfold the wax paper and and lay it on a piece of extra printer paper
• Place the glossy cardstock, shinny side down, onto the wax paper
• Set your iron on the cotton setting and NO STEAM
• Iron directly onto the back of the glossy cardstock, be sure to iron all the edges
• Using classic inch and a rubber brayer, uniformly cover the glossy cardstock with ink
• Where the wrinkled wax paper melted on the cardstock, you should see an uninked pattern

Time to see a finished card...

 

I used the True Friend Stamp Set to create this card during stamp club last year. I LOVE this technique it's easy yet it makes a great background for whatever project you might be doing.

TTIF - Technique Tip It's Friday!

Introducing TTIF....

I am so happy it's Friday and I want to celebrate with a new and reoccurring post!

Welcome to "Technique Tip It's Friday" where I will spotlight a different stamping technique each Friday. One of the swaps I participated in during the Stampin Up Convention this year was a technique swap. I will showcase each of these techniques over the next couple of months. I hope you will enjoy this information and please post comments and let me know how you have incorporated the technique into your stamping projects.

Today we will focus on an oldie but goodie, the "Rock and Roll" technique.

Supplies include: Light and Dark Shade Stamp pad, cardstock, and a solid stamp as these work best with this technique.

Instructions:

1) Ink the solid image stamp with the lighter of the two inks first.

2) Take the darker ink and roll only the edges of the same stamp on the ink pad in a circular motion.

3) Stamp your image on the cardstock.

How easy is that? Now let's look at a finished card. This is a swap I also received at convention featuring the Garden Whimsy and Word on Words Stamp Sets created by Angela R. from Paducah Kentucky.
